The US capital mobilized the National Guard ahead of planned protests by supporters of President Donald Trump in Washington, timed to coincide with the vote in Congress to approve Joe Biden’s victory in the election.
Trump supporters plan to hold rallies in Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday in an effort to back Trump’s claims of massive electoral fraud.
The Defense Department said the DC National Guard will be used to provide assistance in the wake of expected protests this week. At the same time, servicemen will not be armed and will not wear body armor.
The guard will be used to control traffic and provide other assistance.
