USA renewed commitment to fight against violence against women

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made a statement on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

“Around the world, violence against women annually harms not only millions of women and girls, but also their communities and families,” said the Secretary of State. – Violence against women in the workplace, at home, at school or as a result of a conflict or crisis is unacceptable. The United States recognizes the inherent dignity of every woman and girl and is committed to efforts to prevent and combat violence against women. ”

“Every woman and girl deserves a life free from violence. Eliminating violence against women removes major barriers to women’s empowerment, enabling them to become pioneers, innovators and leaders. These efforts require dedication from governments, the private sector and civil society to achieve sustainable results. The United States is proud to celebrate the International Day to End Violence against Women on November 25 and 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, ”the foreign minister said in a statement.

“The United States recognizes that the COVID-19 pandemic has uniquely and disproportionately affected women, from increased levels of violence against women to increased job insecurity,” Pompeo said. – It is time for the international community to unite to end violence against women, support victims and empower them to emerge stronger than ever from the COVID-19 pandemic. The United States is committed to this cause for national security, global prosperity, and the rights and dignity of women and girls around the world. ”
