Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has expressed US concerns about Egypt’s possible purchase of Russian Su-35 fighters, the State Department said.
Blinken said this in a telephone conversation with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri.
“The Secretary of State and the Foreign Secretary underlined the importance of a strong strategic partnership between the United States and Egypt, especially in the area of security and continued cooperation in the fight against terrorism, and exchanged views on regional issues,” said State Department spokesman Ned Price.
“The secretary of state has expressed concerns about human rights, which he stressed will be central to US-Egyptian bilateral relations, as well as Egypt’s potential purchase of Su-35 fighters from Russia,” Price added.
Blinken and Shukri also discussed support for the UN-sponsored peace talks in Libya, the Middle East peace process and counter-terrorism cooperation in the Sinai Peninsula, Price said.
