US opens virtual diplomatic post in Western Sahara

The United States will open a “virtual” diplomatic post in Western Sahara after the recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the disputed territory, the State Department said.

“I am delighted to announce the beginning of the process of opening a US consulate in Western Sahara,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted.

“Right now, we are opening a post of virtual presence in Western Sahara,” he added, adding that later a full-fledged consulate would appear in the region.

In early December, US President Donald Trump made a surprise statement in support of Morocco’s control over the desert territory, which is contested by the Algerian-backed Front Polisario rebels campaigning for the independence of the region.
