US approves first antibody-based COVID-19 drug

Federal health officials have authorized the emergency use of the first antibody-based drug to help a person’s immune system fight COVID-19.

The FDA has approved Eli Lilly’s experimental drug to treat patients over 12 years of age with mild to moderate COVID-19 who do not require hospitalization.

Trials of the drug are ongoing, but it doesn’t seem to be helping patients with more severe disease.

It is similar to the treatment that President Donald Trump received after he contracted the virus in October.

Earlier, the government agreed with the company on the procurement and supply of a significant part of the first batch of the drug.
