US Permanent Representative to the UN Kelly Kraft will travel to Taiwan to show his support for the island’s autonomy from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
“The United States supports the people of Hong Kong and everyone who yearns for freedom,” said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “In this regard, I am delighted to announce the upcoming visit of US Ambassador to the United Nations, Kelly Craft, to Taiwan, who is a reliable partner and a thriving democracy despite the CCP’s attempts to undermine its great success.”
Pompeo announced Kraft’s trip following the mass arrest of 53 pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong.
“Taiwan demonstrates what a free China can achieve,” Pompeo said.
A senior Chinese official responded by saying that “the American side will pay a heavy price for their erroneous actions.”
