The first campaign debate between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden began on Tuesday in a cocky tone when Biden called the president a “clown” and “liar”, exposing the irreconcilable nature of modern American politics.
As the debate moved from discussing the Supreme Court to the coronavirus epidemic, Trump said that if Biden were president, 2 million people would die from COVID-19 in the country.
Moderator Chris Wallace then asked Trump if he had a plan to replace the Affordable Care Act, and the president said, “It looks like I’m debating with you, not him, but that’s okay. I’m not surprised”.
Democrat Biden laughed at Trump’s attacks. But at times it seemed to annoy him as well.
“The thing is, everything he’s talked about so far is just a lie,” Biden said. “I’m not here to point out his lies. Everyone knows he’s a liar. “
Wallace asked Trump not to interrupt Biden.
“Do you guys have any idea what this clown is doing?” – said Biden.
At one point, the Democratic nominee was so outraged that President Trump was constantly interrupting him that he sharply demanded: “Can you, boy, shut up?”
In discussing the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 200,000 Americans, Biden ridiculed President Trump’s proposal earlier this year that people could inject disinfectants to prevent COVID-19.
“This is the same person who told you that it would all be gone by Easter, that the warm weather would miraculously disappear, like a miracle,” Biden said, suggesting Trump could not be trusted. “And by the way, you can introduce a little cleaning agent and it will help. “
“It was said sarcastically, and you know that,” Trump reacted immediately. – It was sarcasm”.
The president said his administration has “done a wonderful job” in the fight against the pandemic.
“We have robes. We have masks. We made ventilators, and you wouldn’t, and now it’s only weeks away from the vaccine, ”Trump said after Biden noted that while the US is home to only about 4 percent of the world’s population, about 20 percent of deaths from coronavirus.
Trump said the situation in the country would be much more dire than the 200,000 deaths and more than 7 million cases of COVID-19 infection if Biden were president.
“You would never have done the work we did. You don’t have it in your blood, “Trump said, referring to Biden.
Trump’s strategy appears to have been to portray Biden as a career politician who has been wrong for his 47 years as Senator and Vice President.
“The people understand,” he told Biden, “that in 47 years you have not done anything.”
Biden, in turn, tried to portray Trump as incompetent on the pandemic, health care and everything else.
“The president has no plan,” Biden said, repeating the thought several times.
In his relentless attacks, Trump called Biden a “socialist”, accusing him of serving the left wing of his party and repeatedly trying to silence the former vice president and moderator with his voice.
Even the intelligence of rivals was under attack.
“Did you use the word smart? Trump told Biden, questioning his academic success. “Don’t even use the word” smart “when talking to me.”
“Oh, come on!” Biden replied, saying Trump has shown less than reasonable leadership.
Moderator Wallace seemed to summarize the discussion when he remarked, “Gentlemen, do you understand what you are saying at the same time?”
