Doug Fisher, editor-in-chief of The Ring magazine, talking about the prospects of the WBC lightweight champion (up to 61.2 kg), American Devin Haney (25-0-0, 15 KO), after defeating the Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-4-0, 18 KO), named a fighter with whom he could fight if he did not come out to a big fight.
According to Fischer, Russian veteran Petr Petrov (41-6-2, 22 KO) could stylistically give Haney a lot of problems.
“If we think of a good fighter to help Haney hone his close-range boxing, then I would suggest a 37-year-old veteran from Russia, Peter Petrov, who is a real pressure fighter.
He has only been stopped twice in 49 pro fights and would have given Haney a good fight back. Plus, he has the experience and dexterity to put an end to the American push himself, “Fischer wrote in a weekly column.
