Financier Bernard Madoff, who was sentenced to 150 years in prison for organizing the largest known financial pyramid in history, died in custody, the Federal Bureau of Prisons said. He was 82 years old.
Madoff suffered from chronic kidney failure and several other diseases.
He was held in federal prison in Butner, North Carolina, after being sentenced to 150 years in prison in June 2009 for organizing an estimated $ 64.8 billion fraudulent scheme.
Madoff has targeted thousands of individuals and organizations, large and small, including charities, pension funds and hedge funds.
