The State Department has approved a potential sale to Saudi Arabia of 3,000 precision-guided weapons under an agreement worth up to $ 290 billion, the Pentagon said.
This happened in the last days of Donald Trump’s presidential term.
“The proposed sale will improve Saudi Arabia’s ability to withstand current and future threats by increasing its stockpile of long-range, air-to-ground precision weapons,” the Pentagon said in a statement.
However, President-elect Joe Biden has pledged to halt arms sales to Saudi Arabia in an attempt to force Riyadh to end the war in Yemen, which has led to the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
Saudi Arabia is the largest buyer of American weapons in the Middle East.
