Six men charged with planning kidnapping of Michigan governor

The six men have been accused of planning the kidnapping of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer as part of an alleged conspiracy by “right-wing extremists” unhappy with her coronavirus containment policy.

US Attorney Andrew Birge said the charge carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The suspects were arrested in October after the FBI investigated alleged plans to kidnap Whitmer from her suburban home in northern Michigan.

The defense lawyers argued that their clients were only conducting “empty talk” and in fact did not plan to kidnap the Democratic governor.
