Scientists have developed a technology for turning wood into transparent glass

Glass made of wood is not a fantasy, but a product of modern technology. Glass made of quartz sand familiar to us has many disadvantages, the main ones being related to the fact that it allows heat to pass from the room to the outside in winter and does not prevent its penetration inside in summer. The result is impressive heating and electricity bills. In addition, glass production is accompanied by large emissions of CO2 and other harmful substances.

The technology for the production of glass from wood was developed by an international team of specialists from the Forest Products Research Laboratory (China), the Universities of Maryland and Colorado (USA). In the course of research, it was found that wood glass is superior to ordinary glass in almost all respects.

The raw material for the production of unusual glass is the wood of a fast-growing balsa tree, which has undergone an oxidation process at room temperature in a special bath. After that, the wood is impregnated with polyvinyl alcohol, the result is an almost transparent material that is much stronger and lighter than glass. It can bend or split, but it does not break into small fragments.

The production of clear wood is also more cost effective as it requires five times less energy. The ecological effect is also obvious, as it is produced from renewable material with low emissions. CO2.
