The City of San Francisco has banned tobacco smoking in apartments, citing concerns about secondhand smoke.
At the same time, smoking marijuana in residential areas is still allowed.
The county council upheld the smoking ban in apartments by ten votes to one. Thus, San Francisco became the largest city in the country where such a ban is in force.
Initially, it was proposed to extend the ban to smoking marijuana, but council members voted to delete the provision from the text of the document after activists said the new law would deprive them of the only place to smoke marijuana, because state law prohibits doing it in public places.
