By analogy with the Galaxy S20 Ultra diary, I, as the editor-in-chief gg I want to take a closer look at the new smartphone Samsung Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition) and share my thoughts on this smartphone with our, the world’s most curious readers, in several materials. Samsung has got an interesting version of the flagship smartphone (which has already received, by the way, our editorial award “we recommend”). Its ideology and positioning are somewhat different from the “lightweight” versions of the flagship models that existed before. Let’s try to figure out what has changed and in what way this model is inferior (and somewhere even wins) from its older counterparts.
Positioning Samsung Galaxy S20 FE
In principle, all lightweight versions of flagships are always aimed at young people. If the target audience of the Galaxy Note series is conditional “IT-professionals”, that is, those “heavy” users who install many applications and actively use them during the day (including at work), then the S-series of smartphones is a universal mainstream, has set the tone for the entire market for over 10 years. Accordingly, the simplified version of the Galaxy S series smartphone has always been seen as a more affordable solution for those who cannot afford (but are a fan of the brand and want a new flagship Samsung smartphone) a full set of advanced technologies. As a rule, everything was sacrificed that could be cut without sacrificing perception: a smaller screen, with a slightly lower resolution, lower battery capacity, a little less camera capabilities, but an obligatory emphasis on more megapixels in a selfie camera.
This year Samsung has changed not only the name – the youngest model in the line is now called not Lite (which, by the way, still leaves a window of opportunity for the Galaxy S20 Lite release, for example, after the New Year), but Fan Edition or FE for short. Thus, the manufacturer emphasizes that the model is released for fans of the brand and refuses to infringe on its ability in the name. The approach in the representation of the model has also been changed. If the face of the main advertising campaign of Samsung is the singer Onuka, then the face of the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is the singer Monatik, whose target audience is active and eager for dance music (club) youth. The smartphone is available in six color options at once, in contrast to the discreet 2 (black and gray) in this year’s flagships.
Here is a summary of the comparison chart to help you understand the differences between all four current Galaxy S20 models. I advise you to keep the link to this page and use it if necessary for a reasoned choice or discussion. Let’s go through the key characteristics and technological capabilities.
The plastic case, with its vibrant colors and matte panels, which leave an order of magnitude less fingerprints (there are tons of people, including me, who are annoyed by glossy surfaces) is a simple visual difference from the rest of the series. In addition to a more aesthetic appearance, the body of this smartphone is less prone to the risk of breaking the rear glass panel.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE has the same 7nm 64-bit 8-core Exynos 990 processor as the rest of the series.
It uses technology from previous generations, but the diagonal size outperforms the base model Galaxy S20. And it also supports adaptive frequency up to 120 hertz. Uses previous generation Corning Gorilla Glass. The fingerprint sensor is also subscreen, but not ultrasonic, but optical. It is believed that ultrasonic is more accurate, but in reality this does not affect the user experience – put your finger and the screen is unlocked.
The built-in drive starts from the same 128 GB of memory, but the amount of RAM starts from 6 GB. I would not say that this is such a serious drawback – in practice, the consumer will not notice the difference, but there is a version with 8/256 GB, which costs only two thousand hryvnia more.
Main camera module
The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE has a triple camera, like the rest of the smartphones in the series. Ultra wide-angle camera, with capture angle 123˚, is identical for all four models, the main camera is the same with all models, except for Ultra, which costs 108 MP. The telephoto lens has fewer pixels, but it provides optical zoom, and not the approximation that uses the additional pixels of the matrix (focal length 76 mm versus 29 mm). In practice, it is difficult to see the difference, but psychologically, I personally trust the optical zoom more. The older models S20 + and S20 Ultra still have a depth module, which, in theory, should work to create a bokeh effect, but modern algorithms for blurring the background put the advisability of paying extra for it into question.
Except for shooting in 8K resolution, everything else is identical, including optical image stabilization when shooting in 4K at 60 frames per second and slow-motion (1080p @ 240 fps) and super slow-motion (720p @ 960 fps) modes.
The 32-megapixel camera outperforms all models in the series, except for the older Galaxy S20 Ultra with its 40 MP.
Battery and charging
There is a key advantage over neighbors that the user can notice. The battery is not reduced compared to the base model, but increased, like in the Galaxy S20 + and is only inferior to the older Galaxy S20 Ultra. Supports wireless and fast charging (including reversible, in which the smartphone itself can become a wireless charger, for example, for watches or headphones). There is only one characteristic in which the S20 FE is weaker than the S20 Ultra – 25 watts of fast charging power, not 45 watts.

Now you know a little more how the capabilities of the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE differ compared to the rest of the Galaxy S20 series, and you can make an informed decision when choosing a model.
Five things to know about the differences between the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and its lineup neighbors
- it uses the same processor as the rest of the S20 series (same performance except for 8K video shooting)
- it has a high capacity battery comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S20 +
- its telephoto lens uses 3x optical zoom and is second only to the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra with its “periscope”
- its front-facing camera outperforms all models in the lineup except the Galaxy S20 Ultra
- it has a matte plastic body, six vibrant color options and the best price
