A Russian military aircraft flew at low altitude over the US destroyer Donald Cook in the Black Sea, where the US Navy sent three of its ships for training.
A Su-24 fighter-bomber swept over the destroyer on Sunday while the ship was in international waters, the US Navy’s Sixth Fleet said.
The Navy said it is operating in the Black Sea to calm regional allies and “ensure security and stability.”
Donald Cook works in conjunction with the destroyer Porter and the ship Laramie, which provides refueling of destroyers during operations.
NATO is focusing on maintaining a presence in the region, which includes the Crimean Peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014.
