US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hinted that he wants to re-add “evil” Cuba to the list of states sponsoring terrorism.
Such a move, taken at the end of his term, would increase pressure on the communist island.
In an interview published on Tuesday, Pompeo confirmed that the Department of State is studying the possibility of such a serious decision before he leaves office on January 20.
“We are not anticipating decisions on such issues, but the world knows about Cuba’s evil hand in many places,” Pompeo told Bloomberg.
“It is perfectly appropriate for us to consider whether Cuba is really sponsoring terrorism,” Pompeo said.
“And if this is the case, then, like any other country that provides material support to terrorists, they should also be classified in this category and should be treated in accordance with their behavior,” he added.
President Barack Obama removed Cuba from the list of states sponsoring terrorism in 2015.
