New England Patriots football coach Bill Belichick has said he will not accept President Donald Trump’s Medal of Freedom from President Donald Trump as planned this week following the January 6 “tragic” Capitol riots.
Belichick, who led the team to six Super Bowl victories, said he was flattered to be nominated for the highest civilian honor in the United States, but chose not to accept it.
“I recently had the opportunity to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which I was flattered out of respect for who it is and admiring those to whom it had been awarded before,” Belichick said. “But then the tragic events of the last week happened and it was decided not to take further action regarding this award.”
Over the weekend, reports that Trump plans to honor Belichick at Thursday’s ceremony have prompted calls for the 68-year-old coach to abandon her, while Trump faces a possible second impeachment for allegedly inciting his supporters to attack the Capitol. …
