New coronavirus strain identified in Florida and China

A new highly infectious strain of coronavirus that has spread in the UK has been identified in Florida and China, health authorities said.

The Florida Department of Health said the new strain was found in a 20-year-old man from Martin County who hasn’t traveled anywhere recently.

This is the third known case of a new variant of the virus in the United States.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said Wednesday that the B.1.1.7 strain has been identified in Southern California.

A day earlier, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said that this variant of the virus had been detected in his state. A state health official also said there could have been a second case, but this has not yet been reliably established.

Meanwhile, Chinese researchers say the new strain seems to have made it to the PRC.

According to the official publication, the researchers discovered the new strain in a woman who took the test upon arriving at Shanghai airport from the UK on December 14.

A weekly review by the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention says this is the first time an “imported (UK) variant has been identified in China and poses a great potential threat to the prevention and control of COVID-19 in China.”
