In honor of World Mental Health Day on October 10, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle contributed to the Teenager Therapy podcast.
The couple spoke with the presenters about their experience of restoring mental health, discussed the stigmatization of mental problems and the era of the Internet. Megan noted that the effects of the pandemic are increasingly pushing people to communicate online, which, she says, makes them more vulnerable and disconnected.
I can tell from my own experience, as I was told that in 2019 I was the most affected person. And now I have already disappeared from sight for eight months: I was on maternity leave, I was engaged in a child. But that didn’t solve the problem. It doesn’t matter if you are 15 or 25 years old, if people tell a lie about you, it is very destructive for the psyche,
Her husband added that, among other things, people’s behavior is influenced by the environment in which they are. The prince noted that during the pandemic, many people were “stuck in their apartments, unable to see the grass and open space.”
We are incredibly lucky to have a lot of outdoor space for our child to walk in. At the same time, many people literally huddle on top of each other and are forced to live like this for months. You can imagine what this does to their psyche,
– shared Harry. The prince emphasized the importance of talking about mental health:
The more we talk about it, the more it becomes the norm. After all, this is not really a sign of weakness – it is a sign of strength.
He noted that people on the Internet allow themselves to say what they would not allow in real life, and urged the audience to observe information hygiene.
The dukes also shared their ways to restore mental health. Megan said that in difficult times, keeping a diary helps her, on the pages of which she can speak. And Harry is practicing meditation.
