“I was forced to have sex for the first time when I was 15 years old. Then I thought I was going to hell for sex before marriage. But now I think that this was not the case, ”the actor shared. Matthew also described how he was once molested by a man when he was 18 years old “lying in the back of the van unconscious.”

However, the actor did not develop these themes in the book and even noted that he did not feel like a victim. He recently explained on the Tamron Hall show why he doesn’t want to discuss it: “I don’t see anything constructive about it. These discussions will turn into headlines: Details of Matthew’s molestation, How McConaughey was blackmailed, and these are the wrong headlines. Was I a victim in those two situations? Yes of course. But this does not mean that I carried it through my life, and I think: “Oh, I am such a victim.” Or that those two unfortunate moments turned me into who I have become. “

Matthew noted that he faced harassment at a conscious age, so he did not “get stuck” in it. “It happened when I was 15 and 18 years old. Maybe if it happened earlier, I would be confused. But when it happened, it was completely clear to me that these were the wrong things, that this should not happen. I think this clarity helped me not to get stuck in this and avoid forming a false idea about how the world works, ”said the actor.
