“Vanity” and “male gaze” are the main reasons for refusal.
English actress Keira Knightley explained why she doesn’t shoot intimate scenes with male directors. In a recent interview, the 35-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean star said that she would no longer act in explicit episodes if they were not directed by a woman. In the Chanel Connects podcast, Kira admitted that she does not like the male view of such things, so she is not ready to bring it to life. “I don’t want it to be those horrible sex scenes where you’re all oiled up and everyone around you grunts,” the actress said.
Knightley admitted that she is very uncomfortable when she tries to “portray a male version” of an intimate scene. This sensation appeared after the celebrity became the mother of two daughters – five-year-old Eddie and one-year-old Delilah. “I am too vain, I already have two children, and I would rather not stand in front of a group of men naked,” – said Kira. Nevertheless, the actress does not categorically refuse such episodes, admitting that it would be more convenient for her to shoot them with female directors.
This is not the only reason a star might abandon the project. Knightley was recently set to star in the new Apple TV + movie The Essex Serpent, but withdrew from the project for “family reasons.” As the actress explained, due to the ongoing pandemic and young children, she decided to give up possible risks for now and stay at home.
