Kamala Harris resigned as Senator

US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris has formally resigned as Senator in preparation for her inauguration on Wednesday.

Harris has served as a California Senator since 2017.

“Thank you California. I have been honored to serve as your Senator for the past four years. Our country has faced many challenges, but I remain confident that our best days are ahead. I promise to continue to uphold our shared values as your vice president, ”Harris tweeted on Monday.

Harris’ seat in the Senate for the remaining two years of her term will be held by the current California Secretary of State, Democrat Alex Padilla. This was announced in December by Governor Gavin Newsom.

Padilla, who has Mexican roots, will become the first Latin American senator to represent California.
