J&J temporarily pauses development of coronavirus vaccine

Johnson & Johnson said Monday that it has temporarily suspended clinical trials of a candidate COVID-19 vaccine due to an unexplained illness in a study participant.

The member’s illness is being studied and evaluated by an independent data and safety monitoring board, as well as doctors and security experts, the statement said.

Stat News reported the temporary suspension, citing a document sent to third-party investigators conducting a clinical trial involving 60,000 patients, which said that a “pause rule” was followed, that the online system used to enroll patients in the study was closed, and a data and security monitoring commission will be convened.
