The House of Representatives approved a one-week extension of federal government funding to prevent government shutdowns and give lawmakers more time to negotiate spending agreements.
The initiative was adopted by 343 votes to 67.
The interim budget is now expected to be quickly submitted to the Senate.
Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made it clear that he intends to hold a vote by Friday when the deadline comes.
If President Donald Trump does not sign the law by midnight Friday, the shutdown will begin on Saturday morning.
