A Wisconsin hospital employee was fired and arrested after removing dozens of vials of coronavirus vaccine from a pharmacy’s refrigerator, intentionally destroying more than 500 doses, the hospital’s investigation showed.
The incident took place over the weekend at the Aurora Medical Center in Grafton, north of Milwaukee.
Grafton police on Thursday announced the arrest of the pharmacist, but did not give his name or identify a motive.
The police said in a statement that the former employee was arrested on suspicion of posing a security risk, tampering with prescription drugs and causing illegal property damage.
According to the hospital, the employee admitted that he had deliberately removed the vaccines from the refrigerator.
The Moderna vaccine must be stored between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius.
