Former Senator Bob Dole diagnosed with lung cancer

Former Republican Senator Bob Dole, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 1996, said he was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and would begin treatment early next week.

“I was recently diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer … While there are certainly some hurdles ahead, I also know that I will become one of the millions of Americans who have their own health problems,” Dole, 97, wrote in on your Twitter account.

Dole served for a long time in Congress, including being the Senate Majority Leader. In the early 1980s, he chaired the Senate Finance Committee, which helps shape the country’s tax, trade and health policy.
