First case of “Brazilian” strain of coronavirus detected in the USA

Laboratory tests by the Minnesota Department of Health have confirmed the first known case of COVID-19 in the United States, associated with a more contagious variant of the coronavirus that was originally identified in Brazil.

A variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus known as Brazil P.1 was detected in a sample taken from a Minnesota resident who recently visited Brazil, the department said in a press release.

While the “Brazilian” variant is believed to be more infectious than the original strain of the virus that causes COVID-19, it is not known if it leads to more severe disease.
