December sets sad U.S. death record from COVID-19

December set the record for the number of deaths from coronavirus in the United States – about 78 thousand people.

However, health officials warned that this figure is likely to be even higher in January, despite the ongoing vaccination campaign.

More than 18,400 people died from COVID-19 in the week of Dec 28 to Jan 3, according to a Reuters tally based on state and county reports.

Over the entire time of the pandemic in the United States, more than 351 thousand people have died from the coronavirus, or approximately one in 930 residents.

Last week, about 1.5 million cases of the disease were detected in the country, which is 16.5 percent more than in the previous seven days.

More than 126,000 patients with COVID-19 are in hospitals, up 25 percent from a month ago.
