Capitol Police Chief Stephen Sand resigns amid criticism of officers’ reactions to the building riots.
Sand will leave office on January 16, just days before the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, a police spokeswoman said.
Earlier, the head of the police union called for a “change of leadership.”
Capitol police have been criticized for failing to prevent demonstrators from entering the building.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, meanwhile, has demanded the immediate resignation of Bailiff Michael Stenger, who is in charge of Senate security.
“Today I demanded that Senate bailiff Michael Stenger resign and receive his resignation letter, which is effective immediately,” McConnell said.
