Leading American infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci received the first dose of the newest COVID-19 vaccine, along with other federal health officials who oversaw its development.
Fauci was vaccinated at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he is director of Allergic and Infectious Diseases.
He received a vaccine that was developed by the NIH and the American pharmaceutical company Moderna and approved for emergency use last week.
He then told reporters that it was wonderful to receive the vaccine less than a year after the discovery of the virus it was designed to fight.
“What we are seeing now is the culmination of many years of research that has led to a truly unprecedented phenomenon,” he said.
