The painting, painted by Winston Churchill, will go under the hammer at the auction.
Angelina Jolie sells the only painting created by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill during World War II. She is expected to receive up to $ 3.4 million for this work at auction.
Churchill wrote The Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque in Morocco after attending a conference in Casablanca in January 1943 and presented it to US President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Actor Brad Pitt bought the painting in 2011 from an antique dealer specifically for Jolie. But now, after the divorce, the actress is ready to part with her – it is planned that by March 1 the work will replenish the collection of the house of Christie’s. Estimated prices range from £ 1.5 million to £ 2.5 million ($ 2 million to $ 3.4 million).
“This is the only work that Churchill wrote during the war, perhaps inspired by the recent progress made by the Allies in one of the most beautiful countries,” said Nick Orchard, head of contemporary British art at Christie’s.
Antique dealer Bill Rau, who previously owned the painting, told CNN that the painting was donated to President Roosevelt’s son, who sold it to a filmmaker in the 1960s. According to Rau, the painting then ended up in New Orleans, where it was kept in a local family’s closet for over 50 years before the stepdaughter inherited the work and contacted his gallery.
