A US warship sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday, the US Navy said. This is the first of its kind since the inauguration of President Joe Biden.
The Arleigh Burke-class missile destroyer John McCain made a routine passage along the waterway separating mainland China and Taiwan, the US Seventh Fleet said in a statement.
The ship’s voyage “demonstrates US commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” the statement said.
“The US military will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows,” the document says.
The Taiwan Ministry of Defense confirmed the ship’s passage without giving its name.
The ship’s passage was preceded by a flight on Monday by two US reconnaissance aircraft and one tanker aircraft near Taiwan’s airspace, the ministry said, without specifying their routes.
